The JPF extension marks an extended JPEG 2000 image, defined in the second part of the standard. Compared with a plain JP2 file, a JPF can carry additional color spaces, compositing layers and rich metadata, which is why professional imaging work and long-term archives use it, and why almost no mobile software opens it.
